Ray Metzker: Landscapes
|
We are pleased to present Ray Metzker: Landscapes from February 14 through March 31. The exhibition features over 35 black and white photographs taken during the years 1985-1998, and will include landscapes from Tuscany (Feste di Foglie series, 1985), Dordogne and Povence (Sojourn series, 1989), and a wide range of locations across the United States, including Wisconsin, Virginia, Kentucky (Earthly Delights, 1987-1990), and Utah (Darkness Reigns and Moab, 1990-1998.) A bold and significant departure from his earlier urban images, which presented mostly dark city scenes accented with light, the recent landscapes are filled with light and air, and show Metzker, at 69 years of age, in total control of his camera vision and printmaking skills. They show Metzker's evolution from making pictures from within the landscape to vistas that extend beyond the lens of the camera. From fluttering leaves floating in space, filling the frame from corner to corner, to calligraphic grasses and branches racing across the picture plane, to large cliffs and buttes balanced against an endless sky, minimal and abstact. The exhibition is accompanied by the new monograph Ray Metzker: Landscapes, and follows his exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. |
