Eadweard Muybridge Athletes in Motion
| Laurence
Miller Gallery will exhibit collotypes by Eadweard Muybridge from his
1887 series on Human and Animal Locomotion from July 8 through August
20, 2004. In celebration of the upcoming Olympic Games, which will be
held in Athens, Greece from August 13 through 29, the plates that have
been selected are motion studies depicting events that are contested in
the modern-day Olympics.
The Olympics were revived in Athens in 1896, inspired by the Frenchman Baron de Coubertin. Though Muybridge’s studies predate this revival, they include images of athletes performing most sports that were contested when the Olympics began again. Included in this show will be athletes performing in individual field events such as pole vault, long jump, running, high jump and javelin throw; indoor contests such as fencing, boxing, and wrestling; and team sports such as baseball. In the same way that today’s Olympic Games have evolved while simultaneously paying homage to the tradition of the 19th century revival, the motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge seem very contemporary, not only because they were innovative when they were first created, but because of the tremendous influence they have had on photographers, painters, and filmmakers throughout the 20th century. |
Each collotype measures approximately 19 x 24" paper size. Image size varies.
All plate numbers refer to Muybridge's
Complete Human and Animal Locomotion,
three edition set, Dover
Publications, 1979.
