OASES group selection
| Laurence
Miller Gallery is pleased to present OASES, a group show that
explores the landscape as a place for refuge and contemplation, as well
as for menace and vulnerability. The ten photographers exhibiting are
Larry Burrows, Lois Conner, Stephane Couturier, Yannick Demmerle,
Lennart Durehead, William Eggleston, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Uta Kogelsberger,
Mark Mann and Toshio Shibata.
The landscape has always provided artists with an infinite range of choices for personal expression, whether it be the depiction of a holy place or the carnage of a battlefield. The ten artists selected for OASES each bring a different interpretation to the landscape. Yannick Demmerle invites the viewer to feel lost within the rich details of an endless autumn forest; William Eggleston records a detail of golden sand scarred by a tire track, and punctuated by weeds; Larry Burrows, shooting from a helicopter, reveals a group of helpless Vietcong prisoners being marched across water-filled rice paddies; Mark Mann creates an urban oasis in which a family seeks safety in the median of grass between lanes of a highway; Uta Kogelsberger reveals a nighttime scene in which a barren house offers comfort within the darkness of a subterranean land; and Lennart Durehed captures an industrial scene bathed in both sun and rain simultaneously. |
