Laurence Miller Gallery Exhibition                                                       Nov 4- Dec 24, 2004

   Important Photographs
from a private swiss collection

IMPORTANT PHOTOGRAPHS FROM A PRIVATE SWISS COLLECTION will be on view at Laurence Miller Gallery from November 4 - December 24, 2004. This exhibition marks the first in a series devoted to a single collector's vision and point of view that the Laurence Miller Gallery will present over the next few years. Each of the prints on exhibit from this Swiss Collection reveals a strong affinity for the human condition, especially the idea of belonging to a group versus the desire for individuality.

Robert Frank's classic "City Fathers, Hoboken, 1955" majestically shows the power of political connections, whereas William Eggleston's "Southern Environs of Memphis, 1972" speaks of the forces of conformity and urban growth. Nan Goldin's "Flaming Car, Salisbury Beach, N.H., 1979" and Lee Friedlander's "Nude, 1979" celebrate private passions made public, while Jakob Tuggener's "Hungarian Ball, Zurich, 1935" reveals an intimate moment within a large festive gathering.

The collection is all post-war with one exception --Tuggener's "Hungarian Ball, 1935"--and unique in its mix of European (Frank, Tuggener, and Boubat) and American (Friedlander, Goldin, Klein, and Eggleston) image makers. It is curious, as well, that Robert Frank is Swiss living in the US, and William Klein is American living in Paris.
