Ruth Thorne-Thomsen: Agua Tierra
| Agua
Tierra, a new
body of work consisting of approximately 15 black-and white seascapes
by Ruth Thorne-Thomsen, will be exhibited at Laurence Miller Gallery
from July 10 through August 24, 2001. This new digital work expands
upon her previous process of using the pinhole camera and paper
negatives to create convincing, visually inhabitable environments that
retain mystery and a strong dreamlike quality.
The starting point for this series was photographs shot in Mexico using a rugged shoreline and the ocean as a backdrop. The pinhole camera enables Ms. Thorne-Thomsen to capture the simplicity of the watery environment, and the use of the paper negative lends a moody, atmospheric quality to the rocky landscape. Rarely does humanity intrude into these quiet pictures, but when it does, it is often whimsical, like a solitary diver or dog alone in the vast sea. The final prints were made using Iris print technology. All images are 24 x 28" Iris prints, edition 25 |
