Jerry Uelsmann

In the introduction to Jerry Uelsmann, Twenty-Five Years: A Retrospective, by James L. Enyeart, Jerry Uelsmann is described as "one of that select group of artists who can be said to have altered the very language of their discipline." A pioneer in the field of photomontage, he is highly regarded for his unprecedented, non-digitized multiple imagery black and white photographs. Using depictions of anything from waterfalls to writing desks, tree bark to eyeballs, Uelsmann plays with the human need to create relationships between otherwise disparate objects. The result is a world in which mystery, fantasy and humor have free reign and the unexpected becomes the everyday. Born in Detroit in 1934, Jerry Uelsmann has enjoyed a long and celebrated career. His work has been exhibited at over 100 museums and galleries worldwide and is represented in all major collections.
