JESSICA BACKHAUS  I Wanted to See the World

Laurence Miller Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in the United States of 39 year old Berlin-based photographer Jessica Backhaus.  This ten-year survey features fifty images selected from her four published monographs.

Jesus and the Cherries, published by Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg in 2005, is a portrait of a rural Polish village virtually frozen in time, where religious iconography and the new refrigerator share equal importance in the living room. Fall 2008 brought two new books: What Still Remains, a series on the objects and interiors we leave behind and the stories they tell about us; and One Day in November, a visual homage to Jessica's long-time friend and mentor, the late Gisèle Freund, who would have turned 100 that December. Her most recent book, I Wanted to See the World, has just been published by Laurence Miller Gallery and Kehrer Verlag on the occasion of her show in New York. This book features forty photographs taken primarily in Venice and Burano, Italy, in which the play of light and color on the surface of rippling waters create marvelous, sensuous, and painterly abstractions.

Jessica Backhaus is an artist who captures nuances of everyday life with a  combination of a powerful sense of color and an emotional sensibility.  Whether it be a jar of cherries, a hot-pink plastic ribbon tied to a pole, or dancing reflections on water,  her camera becomes an extension of her heart as well as her mind.

Jessica Backhaus has exhibited widely in Europe, including: the Martin Gropius-Bau, Berlin; The Photographers Gallery, London; Robert Morat Galerie, Hamburg; Fotohof, Salzburg, Austria; and the National Portrait Gallery, London. A selection of her work will be on exhibit at the Margulies Warehouse, Miami during Art Miami and Art Basel Miami.
