Laurence Miller Gallery Exhibition                              Sept 6 - Oct 27, 2001

 Vincenzo Castella

Laurence Miller Gallery is pleased to present the first New York one-person exhibition of the large-scale color photographs by VINCENZO CASTELLA, from September 6 - October 27, 2001. The exhibit is part of the "Focus on Italy 2001" festival.

Castella, born in Naples in 1952, uses a large format camera and digital printing technology to create urban landscapes that investigate the commonalities and differences between cities of the Western world, from Amsterdam to Naples. Crammed with minute details and distant horizons, these urban overviews compare and contrast not only the evidences of history, but proof of unstoppable change. For example, a panoramic view of the Milan skyline features century old duomos along side rooftop satellite dishes.

Furthermore, Castella uses digital technology to slightly alter the appearance of his cityscapes, so that one's initial response is gradually subverted into recognition that all is not what it appears to be. Colors are muted, and distant horizons fade off into a crystalline haze. Fascinated by architectural design, Castella sees his artistic role as that of translator—by accepting and subverting the reality before the camera and the traditional role of documentary photography, he explores the relationship between the real world and the realm of the imagination.
