 Lois Conner  To Be

Lois Conner’s new work--approximately 15 large-scale and 20 smaller scale panoramas of women in the later stages of pregnancy --will be the feature exhibition at Laurence Miller Gallery from December 6, 2003 through January 21, 2004. These photographs of pregnant nudes represent a marked departure from the portraits and landscapes for which Ms. Conner has achieved her stature and renown.

When Lois Conner was 15 she saw her first naked pregnant woman—her older sister. The lasting impression this vision left on Ms. Conner gave her the impetus to renew the project when her niece became pregnant. The resultant body of work, which she has titled To Be, is a series of monumental photographs of nudes, which celebrate the pregnant body as a symbol of life, renewal, and rebirth, while emphasizing the difference between them. The women who have allowed themselves to be photographed range in age from young to middle age, and they are photographed in their homes, their yards, or their places of recreation.

Among the museums that have collected the works of Lois Conner are: the Musuem of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Cleveland Museum of Art; Smithsonian Institution, Washington; and the Victoria and Albert, London.
