Shadows, perhaps more than any other subject, were the career long focus for Crawford's camera. Whether it be a shadow cast by a flower holder on a gravestone, the underside of the Third Avenue El train tracks, or one created by a ventilator on a ship's deck, shadows and the changing forms that they created occupied a central place in this artist's vision of the world. Crawford had an uncanny ability to combine in his mind and in his camera, the fleeting, ephemeral shadow with the solid and static object, thus creating unique forms that he later powerfully presented in bold colorful flat shapes on his canvases. Phantom Forms is the third exhibition of Ralston Crawford at the Laurence Miller Gallery.
