Robert Frank  Selected Works 1948 - 1961

Laurence Miller Gallery is pleased to present ROBERT FRANK: SELECTED WORKS 1948-1961, from January 10- February 23, 2002. Arguably the most influential photographer of the post-war era, this selection brings together both well known and rarely seen images from the most critical and lyrical period of his career, and juxtaposes them to reveal in a fresh light the themes that Frank repeatedly was drawn to.

Certainly isolation and sadness appear throughout the work, whether it be three crosses marking the scene of an accident along U.S. 91, Idaho from 1956, an anonymous outstretched arm offering medallions for sale at a San Gennaro festival in 1950, or a Paris park scene c. 1951 in which a couple sit side by side on a bench, bodies touching, but seemingly oblivious to one another.

Irony plays an important role in Frank’s work as well, and this is vividly presented in two unusual works from 1961: plaster angels float across the window of a New Jersey laundromat, and flashbulbs and cigarette butts are all that remain from an evening gala in a Venetian dining hall.

Over twenty works in the exhibit follow Frank in a wide path around the world, including Peru, Paris, London, Venice, New York, Wyoming and Idaho. At every stop Frank brought his singular vision into play, and the results changed how subsequent generations would see the world.
