Charles Harbutt: Dreams and Memories
"Dreams and Memories" by Charles Harbutt, features over thirty black and white photographs by this 66 year old New York photographer. Each image evokes a palpable sense of isolation, celebration, anticipation, or feelings of loss. Harbutt captures those fleeting moments often left unseen by the casual observer.
In a career spanning forty years, Harbutt has focused on the themes of depersonalization and the search for human contact. Whether it be a blind boy touching a beam of light on the wall, a teenager staring out from behind the bars of a jail cell door, two prostitutes in Mexico waiting for their Johns, or teens smoking in the back seat of a car, Harbutt’s poetic images speak of possibilities and might-have-beens. Furthermore, a selection of Harbutt’s recent "Hypograms" deal with transformations, as the artist’s hands and gloves, while remaining recognizable, become abstract forms glowing with an inner light.
Harbutt joined Magnum in 1963, was twice its president, and has concentrated on magazine and book work since. Exhibitions include The Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Bibliotheque Nationale, and Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Whitney Museum, NY. His work is in over 25 museums collections.
