Helen Levitt  Crosstown

The work in this exhibition was all personally selected by Ms. Levitt herself, and consists primarily of rarely seen and never previously published pictures, all dating from 1963 or later. Though the pictures may be unfamiliar, the gritty-yet-lyrical vein that has characterized all her work is unmistakably present. From pigeons keeping time on a New York rooftop, to the solitary figure of an elderly man reflected in a shop window, this exhibition will emphasize the inventiveness, creativity, and sense of humor that continues to pervade Ms. Levitt’s work.

The exhibition is held in conjunction with the publication of what promises to be Ms. Levitt’s magnum opus, her new book Crosstown, which is the largest selection of her work ever published. Of the 175 pictures in the book, some are familiar from past exhibitions and publications, but many will be reproduced for the very first time.

Helen Levitt lives in New York City, and continues to work. In addition to making the aforementioned book possible, she will be the subject of a major retrospective at the Centre national de la photographie in Paris, opening September 12, 2001, and has recently been named a contributing editor at Doubletake Magazine. Her work is in most major museum collections worldwide.
