Helen Levitt Chalk-Drawing Murals
|
Helen Levitt was involved briefly with the Federal Art Project in the 1930's, teaching art to children. Shortly thereafter, she independently produced a series of about 160 photographs of children's chalk drawings. Now, more than 60 years later, Ms. Levitt has selected 10 of these images to produce as large-scale murals, approximately 30 x 40 inches each, and the result is a body of work that is intriguing for its startlingly contemporary feel. Combining elements of primitive and folk art, collage, and surrealism, these new murals reveal an artist who was ahead of her time from early on in her career. |
