Eadweard Muybridge Animals Locomotion Collotypes

Eadweard Muybridge, Animal Locomotion, 1887As popular as Eadweard Muybridge motion studies are in the contemporary artistic dialogue, there can be no doubt that the most famous of his works are the series of studies that he made, at the behest of Leland Stanford, of the true motion of a horse in full gallop.  After he figured out how to further approximate accurate renderings of motion in animals, Muybridge began obsessively trying to record how all animals, including humans, moved. From this obsession, there emerged a curious and fascinating collection of all types of animals in a myriad of movements resulting in the production of collotype prints for the Animal Locomotion  portfoilo in 1887.

A collotype is a a kind of photo-lithograph in which glass replaces stone as the printing surface. Each collotype measures approximately 19 x 23 1/2 inches. These prints are original pages from the portfolio sets published by the University of Pennsylvania in 1887. All plate numbers and titles refer to Muybridge's Complete Human and Animal Locomotion, three edition set, Dover Publications, 1979. Please inquire as to price and availability.

All artworks from the series Animal Locomotion, 1887. Collotype prints approximately 20 x 24"
