Julie Mack’s droll family portrait will feel utterly familiar to anyone who has packed into a vehicle with their family, yet the meticulous documentation of this act—which is so routine as to usually go unnoted—allows us to see it with fresh eyes. As photographed by Mack, a family outing resembles a group of astronauts awaiting the countdown for launch.
This picture was featured in the exhibition “(un)expected families” at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and will be included in "Together" at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in the spring of 2023.
