Description

November 29, 2021
This towering (yet refreshing) image of healthful looking green juice may appear to be a double exposure, but it’s actually a straight photograph of a building's reflection captured in a New York City display window. The picture demonstrates the way that the city is threaded through with visions of product-driven lifestyles. Anastasia Samoylova’s series IMAGE CITIES examines this trend, specifically looking at the way photographic imagery like this has surpassed architecture as the defining feature of city-spaces. Samoylova’s affinity for Walker Evans is perhaps nowhere more apparent than in their shared fascination with signage, and what those signs tell us about the places and cities they adorn. The kinship between the two photographers is explored in depth in Steidl's recently published photo book: Anastasia Samoylova & Walker Evans: Floridas.

In May, 2022 our debut of Anastasia Samoylova's series IMAGE CITIES—NYC was singled out by Artnet as one of "Five Highlights at the 2022 AIPAD Photography Show".
