This photograph pays tribute to the United States as the source of two enduring and seemingly boundless promises: the vast landscape of the American West, and buying on credit. The picture is representative of David Graham's career-long investigation into the way that signage and iconography are embedded into the American landscape. Graham's witty eye always yields colorful images that are droll yet illuminating.
This picture is among those featured in THEN/NOW, a retrospective exhibition devoted to David Graham's career teaching photography at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. The show is on view now through February 1st in the The Photography Program Gallery. The exhibit honors Graham's more than twenty years of work as a professor in the University of the Arts Photography Program.
