Anastasia Samoylova's Breakfast With series playfully pays homage to the greats of twentieth century photography. These works capture moments of morning inspiration, in the form of photo books, breakfast, and coffee.
This picture celebrates the work of French poet, painter, and photographer Dora Maar. The gelatin silver print we see reproduced in this image was made in 1934, at the height of Maar's surrealist period, when she was using techniques such as photomontage to create dreamlike scenes. She was one of the few women at the time to be included in the surrealists' exhibitions.
Maar’s accomplishments in the field of photography have often been overshadowed by her tumultuous affair with Pablo Picasso, but Samoylova’s tribute offers a reminder that Maar should be remembered as an accomplished artist and photographer.
