In 2016 Diane Tuft traveled to Greenland to visually document the increasing rate of Arctic melt. She took this photograph in Disko Bay, a large body of water off the country's rugged western coast. The bay is known for the striking beauty of its towering icebergs, which are produced when ice breaks away from Jakobshavn Glacier. That ice loss has been dramatically accelerating in recent decades, with the added glacial water driving rising sea levels. Tuft’s photograph inspires awe in all senses of the word: both reverence for the grandeur of the locale and a sense of apprehension for what a changing climate portends. This majestic picture could be seen as a call for the humility and respect that our planet should rightfully command.
