This picture is a particularly delightful example of Fan Ho’s mastery of composing with light and shadow. He creates a zippy modernist rhyme by contrasting the horizontal stripes of the blinds, and the vertical stripes of the cleaner’s attire.
Fan Ho had a cinematic eye so it only makes sense that in the 1960s he entered into a long career in film, first joining the Shaw Brothers film production company, and then pursuing his own career as a director. He once remarked that “Photography and filmmaking are like sisters. One is still and one is moving—that is the only difference.”
