Description

December 4, 2023
In honor of the Helen Levitt survey exhibition now on view at the Margulies Warehouse in Miami, we’re featuring this classic print by Levitt.

Certain photographs achieve their own unique form of perfection. This picture is a joy to look at because of the way that it finds an idiosyncratic sense of order in a scene of disarray. There are 20 people in this photograph, all doing their own thing, yet they each fall into place within the rhythm of the picture. The ensemble is anchored by the frame within a frame, which the young boy on a tricycle gazes through—with a concentrated interest that mirrors our own.

The exhibition at the Margulies Warehouse was organized by head curator Katherine Hinds and associate curator Jeanie Ambrosio. The show presents a career-spanning selection of 176 prints, drawn from the unparalleled collection that Martin Margulies acquired over the course of several decades from the Laurence Miller Gallery.

The exhibition will be on view through April 27, 2024.
