Description

January 15, 2024
Yoko Ikeda's photography is distinguished by her knack for finding poetry in overlooked spots. Shibuya Ward in Tokyo is a bustling entertainment district, centered around one of the busiest transit hubs in the world. Like Times Square, we've all seen countless photographs of throngs of people beneath the area's digital billboards. Ikeda offers an entirely different view of the ward, focusing her camera on the zigzagging composition created by the way the chevron patterned brickwork intersects with the caution tape bounding a temporary walkway. Forgoing the famous and the familiar, Ikeda prioritizes the sense of discovery—using her eye to lead us to new places.
