Eadweard Muybridge’s groundbreaking motion studies captured the public’s imagination in the 19th century, and they still delight a broad audience today. They are striking now in the way that they so clearly prefigure the enormous influence of the motion picture in the 20th century. The subject of this photo sequence, who we see turning briskly with a hat and cane, now looks like a precursor to Charlie Chaplin’s beloved film persona “the Tramp”.
