Harry Callahan's genius as a photographer slowly reveals itself in this quiet, desolate intersection in Providence, Rhode Island. The word "equilibrium" comes to mind, as opposing forces stand their ground: Sun versus shadow, divided but for a single man taking long strides. Abstraction versus description. Flatness versus volume.

I purchased this print from Harry approximately 50 years ago, and have always enjoyed it. It feels like a self portrait, with that small man representing Harry, out for a morning stroll surrounded by the massive volume of architecture in complete silence. It also makes me laugh, recognizing that Harry intentionally incorporated that two-way sign in the lower right corner.. perhaps to send a message of infinite choice, neither right nor wrong. Lastly, like a magician, Harry spots the leaning lamp post on the left and just refuses to let it touch the shadow. A gentle kiss withheld.

Thank you Harry,

Laurence Miller
