This long-exposure photograph by Italian photographer Luca Campigotto reveals why Monument Valley is a stargazer’s dream. Located along a remote section of the Arizona-Utah border, the vast red-sand desert remains untouched by modern light pollution. Campigotto captures the slow arc of the Milky Way as it drifts above the desert’s monumental sandstone buttes—formations carved over the course of long geological epochs. By juxtaposing the motion of the stars with the ancient stillness of the towering buttes, the photograph becomes an awe-inspiring meditation on the immensity of time.
