Keith Davis made this image outside Verdun, a small city in northeastern France. The scene unfolds in a spray of color and dappled light, yet beneath this dazzling façade lies a deeper significance. The photograph is part of a larger body of work in which Davis explores the battlefields of World War I. The hills north of Verdun were the site of the longest battle of the First World War, a conflict that exacted an immense human toll and transformed the land itself. Although the battlefield is now lush with regrowth, countless unexploded ordnance remain buried beneath the soil. Davis' image thus serves as a poignant reminder of how rebirth and renewal remain entwined with the legacies of the past.
