This image is hard to top as a compelling visualization of the complex relationship between parents and their adult children. Diane Arbus was famously known for both her bloodhound-like focus on the less common corners of the human experience and her way of forming bonds with her subjects that gained her access to their private moments. We see that here; Arbus met Eddie Carmel in his role as a performer in Times Square, but she chose to photograph him in the intimacy of the home in the Bronx that he shared with his parents—a nest that Carmel had literally outgrown. It's easy to see why this richly layered image is one of the best known works within Arbus' celebrated and widely influential oeuvre.
We are pleased to offer this vintage print of this highly sought-after picture, which is available for private viewing at our apartment in Manhattan, during the AIPAD Photography Show (April 22–26).
