Description

August 17, 2025
The scale of things seems to impart meaning in this bucolic image. The landscape, with its soaring cliff-face, dwarfs the young beach-goers in the foreground, yielding a sense of how time and the world itself seem to sprawl out almost infinitely in youth.

Peter Bialobrzeski made his Heimat series of photos (German for "Homeland") upon returning to Germany, after devoting himself to shooting the emerging Asian mega-cities in the early 2000s. The series examines the legacy of German Romanticism in the light of contemporary leisure activities situated in the vast expanse of the German landscape. The images at once capture the landscape as a repository for sentimental ideas of place, while presenting a humbling depiction of our relatively small and delicate existence within nature.
