Precise angles abound in this elegantly composed drama. The slanting light and shadow point us straight to the woman with laser-like focus, while her downcast gaze implies its own opposing 45-degree vector.
Chinese photographer Fan Ho was active as a street photographer in Hong Kong at a time when the city was transitioning from a bustling maritime shipping hub to a cosmopolitan center for manufacturing, finance, and—importantly for Ho—a base of operations for Asian film production. The cinematic qualities of a work like this one anticipate his entry into the Hong Kong film industry in the following decade.
Fan Ho's most gripping photographs are always undergirded by a strong sense of geometric abstraction. Yet, unlike the European Modernists who preceded him, his work never moved toward pure formalism; Ho's geometry is always in service of a heightened sense of human drama and emotion. As his most widely celebrated image, this picture contains everything that made his reputation in the international photo community. This rare and special piece represents the last print from the final edition made during Fan Ho's lifetime.
