Toshio Shibata falling waters
| Laurence
Miller Gallery is pleased to present Falling Waters, its fifth
exhibition of the large-scale black and white landscape photographs of
Japanese photographer Toshio Shibata. Drawing upon works from many
locations made over the past dozen years, this exhibition will
exclusively feature views with water cascading over dams, waterfalls,
and other man-made structures.
Shibata's photographs convey a powerful drama generated by the conflict of natural forces against man-made structures. Water spills, crashes, glides, and pours over walls, sluices, concrete blocks and channels, in an endless gravity- propelled dance. Despite elegant and powerful obstacles made to contain the flow, the water continues in a seemingly infinite progression. Through time exposures, the water appears almost ghostly and without substance, yet full of movement. The rich printing makes these works highly abstract. Images available as: 20 x 24" prints, edition 25 32 x 40" and 40 x 50" prints , edition 10 |
