Maggie Taylor
| Working
with a computer and a flatbed scanner, Ms. Taylor is able to create
complex color images from common and ordinary objects. Her pictures
are endowed with a blend of wit, realism, and irony that make us smile
and cringe at the same time. In Birthday Girl, a rather
staid-looking female figure floats mysteriously above the floor, her
dress tied up and legs like a helium-filled balloon. In Easter
Sunday, a small pig is given wings - perhaps as a foretelling
of his future as Easter Sunday Dinner? And in Out of the Nest, a
fledgling human with baby-bird wings has fallen down and seems to be
unable to help itself up. In the words of curator Dennis High, "a
journey into Maggie's world, no matter how brief, is one of magic and
wonder."
Maggie Taylor was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1961, and received an MFA in photography from the University of Florida in 1987. She is the recipient of many technology-associated awards, and a Florida Artist Fellowship in 1986. Her work is in the collections of the Art Museum, Princeton; Fogg Art Museum, Harvard; Musee de la Photographie, Belgium; Museet For Fotokunst, Denmark, and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
