Times Two

From July 7 through August 19, Laurence Miller Gallery will feature Times Two, an exhibition of classic and contemporary black-and-white and color photographs that examine the idea that pictures, ideas, and themes are often enhanced when perceived or constructed in duplicate.

The notion of “duplicate” in various forms will be explored in this group show.   Zeke Berman’s Goblet Portraits is a study in perception, as is Ruth Thorne-Thomsen’s Two Faces are a Vase. In Jerry Uelsmann’s A Small Woods Where I Met Myself, a landscape is made whole and meaningful only when composed as a reflection.  Landscape diptychs by DoDo Jin Ming and Ray K. Metzker, one warm, the other cool, provide a study in movement and still life.

Two artists use the idea of the urban space to different means: Kenneth Snelson’s  images of Times Square, one made in 1980, the other 1994, provide a study in the nature of time, and Seoul Diptych no. 3 by Stephane Couturier represents the urban space as meditative architecture. Duane Hanson’s Self-Portrait and Model and Michael Spano’s Viewing explore the idea that a figure study is enhanced by juxtaposition with another figure or model, and Helen Levitt’s Gypsy Boy c. 1940, two views, offers insight into the seminal working methods of this wonderful photographer.
