Burk Uzzle Riptide: America on the Flipside

Riptide: America on the Flipside, recent photographs by Burk Uzzle, will be on exhibit at Laurence Miller Gallery from November 4 - December 24, 2004. With humor and charm, Burk Uzzle has continued his four-decade exposition on how Americans display their idiosyncratic dreams and aspirations.

From Daytona Beach, Florida to Winooski, Vermont, Burk Uzzle discovers and celebrates, in black-and-white, the quirky displays of patriotism, childhood, and fantasy that are unique to America. A homeowner in Vermont places more than four dozen homemade artificial cows in his yard each day, to what purpose we don't know. A car owner in South Carolina completely covers his car in shrubbery, like an exotic topiary sculpture. A field in Georgia is covered by rows of miniature crosses, like grave markers from a war between Lilliputians.

The exhibition will also include several new works in color, in which the artist photographs heaps of shredded papers from the offices of professionals, like a homeopath and a novelist, and from the studio of an erotic artist. Evocative of Jackson Pollock and Cy Twombly, these richly textured images function as humorous occupational portraits. . .we may not be able to read their writings, but we can deduce their professions.
