Jeff Weiss The Big Boys are Coming
| The
Big Boys are Coming is Jeff Weiss' first one-person exhibition at
the Laurence Miller Gallery. The exhibition features eight large-scale
color works that join photography and painting through the use of the
computer, and that combine humor with horror. In the artwork Excursion,
a fifteen-foot wide triptych, we simultaneously witness white water
rafters, black smoke billowing out of the distant landscape
reminiscent of Kuwait, an absurd but real dolphin shaped aircraft, and
a wide assortment of contemporary details within a traditional
painterly space. In Multi-Use Area (Bronco), an idyllic
foreground of flowers, butterflies, and hummingbirds is juxtaposed
with jarring and unsettling acts of violence: a hunter points his
rifle at lovers hidden behind a wall; a nuclear-type disaster
unfolds on the horizon; and a fleet of yellow helicopters, appearing
like a swarm of bees, disrupts the gorgeous afternoon sky. Jeff Weiss
has been exhibiting painting, photography and sculpture since 1970. He
is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships.
He currently teaches at Rochester Institute of Technology, and lives
in New York and Vermont.
All images are C-prints on Fuji Crystal Archive paper and also available as 30 x 40" prints. |
