Ruth Bernhard was a German-born American photographer best known for her studio-based photographic practice. Born on October 14, 1905 in Berlin, Germany, she moved to New York in 1927. By her late 20s, she was deeply involved with the lesbian subculture of the artistic community of Manhattan.
